Students set off to celebrate Welsh Culture in Poland
Students from Coleg Gwent are heading to Poland to celebrate the completion of a two year cultural exchange project. For the past two years Independent Living Skills (ILS) students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus have been participating in the Comenius Project, a European education programme. The project aims to inform young people about a range of European cultures, language and values, through a common project based on artistic expression of the seasons. The project will conclude with a five day festival in the Polish city of Kolbuszowa, where the students will meet with their counterparts from Turkey, Hungary, Romania and Poland. Students from all nations will be showcasing their culture through crafts, song and performances, with Coleg Gwent’s students singing ‘Sosban Fach’ and performing traditional Welsh country dancing. The students will also attend lessons in a Polish school and take cultural excursions to museums and a trip to Krakow, Poland’s oldest city. Student, Morgan Steed said: “I’m really looking forward to the festival. I’ve never been to Poland and I’m looking forward to performing and meeting new people.” ILS Lecturer, Victoria English said: “All the staff are thrilled to be taking the students to Poland, for this amazing opportunity. All the students are so excited to take part in the festival. “ |
European skills share project
Staff and students from Coleg Gwent have been awarded a grant enabling them to travel to different European countries on educational exchanges.
Thanks to a grant from the Comenius Programme, an organisation which enables European schools and colleges to establish partnerships, the Independent Living Skills (ILS) department at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus now has the opportunity to share knowledge and expertise with teachers and students in Romania, Poland, Hungary and Turkey.
The project is aimed at involving disabled children and youngsters between 14 and 20 years-old in therapeutic artistic activities. The project includes special education institutions in Poland, Turkey, Romania, Hungary and Wales and will conclude in an Arts Festival in Poland 2015, where ILS students from Coleg Gwent hope to join their fellow European students.
Victoria English, ILS tutor at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus said: “It has been an amazing opportunity to learn from other countries and collaborate to develop artistic activities for our students. We are also incredibly excited about the festival in 2015 and taking a group to Poland.”
Coleg Gwent staff visited partner schools in Romania and Poland last year observing art, craft and music classes. This year ILS staff are hoping to visit schools in other countries with a group of Coleg Gwent’s ILS students.
